This is a double header. A Bald Eagle early in the morning, Plus a colorful Sunrise! This combines a couple of the reasons I enjoy photographing at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge outside of Cambridge, Maryland. Shot with a Canon 400mm f/4 DO lens with a Canon 1.4X teleconverter. The Eagle was backlit, so I exposed for the sky, then opened up the shadows in Adobe Camera Raw.

I was going through images I have not worked on and found a series from the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. One of my favorite locations with colorful sunrises & sunsets and the largest concentration of Bald Eagles in the Northeast in the Winter months. In the warmer months there are still a large number of Bald Eagles but not as many as in the Winter.
It is fun to see them flying around the Refuge, often interacting with each other.

When I photograph at the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Sanibel Florida, I like working an area. If you wait and look around you can find photo subjects that basically come to you. If you constantly move around your subjects see you coming and move away. Shorebirds working a Shoreline coming up to you, Cormorants or Anhingas surfacing near you and my favorite, birds flying over or by you. I like photographing birds in flight instead of just sitting there.

Little Blue Heron Flyby, 300mm f/4, 1.4x teleconverter
Immature Bald Eagle, very early in the morning near sunrise. Very little light, and far out in the distance. Severe Crop of image.

This Bald Eagle flew out of a tree I was standing next to. I had not noticed it was in the tree until it was winging away from me. So I got a quick shot of it flying away. So I guess the advice to this is to pay more attention to what is around you as you are walking around. So this is the one that got away!

These Bald Eagles seemed to have a lot to say as we were passing by on the Wildlife Drive at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. They were there for quite a while, squawking loudly, as we were photographing them.

I was going through old images I never worked on and found this series from the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, in Cambridge Maryland. I saw this Bald Eagle on a snag along the entrance to the Refuge. Throughout the Refuge they have snags, dead trees, setup for the Eagles to roost on. Most are quite far out, either in the water or on land across the water. I liked the warm early morning colors in the sky behind the Eagle, so I was trying various exposures since the Eagle was backlit against the colorful sky. It would glance my way every once in a while just checking me out. All of a sudden it leaned forward and seemed to be staring at me. So I took one more shot and moved on. I did not want to disturb the Eagle & I was pretty far away. I was shooting at 800mm so I do not think I was bothering it. I think it was checking me out. Plus there is a steady stream of visitors on the Wildlife Drive, so they are used to visitors stopping. These were cropped quite a bit to give more detail to the Eagle.

I saw this Bald Eagle flying towards me. As the Eagle got somewhat closer, I noticed it was carrying a fish, but the fish was torn in half. The head & body were in it’s claws and the tail was grasped in its beak. It just seemed strange to see the Eagle with a fish torn in half, flying by me. I have seen them carrying parts of a fish before, but not two separate pieces.

I switched over to a new iMac and was setting my Hard Drives. Going through some old external Hard Drives I found this Bald Eagle photo from 2011 taken at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge Maryland. They have one of the largest amounts of Bald Eagles (in the Winter months) in the Northeast. But it such a large area with many areas you cannot get access to photograph. It was shot with a Sigma 300-800mm lens @ 800mm, with a 1.4X Teleconverter on an old Canon 20D and cropped in some. When you add the teleconverter and the 1.6X crop of the old 20D it comes out to 1792mm for the uncropped version. Surprised it looks this good. But it brings back memories.

I saw this Bald Eagle carrying it’s meal, a partially eaten bird, flying into a tree. As I was trying to get a few shots of it in the tree, a vulture swooped in to try to get some of the meal. The Eagle flew off across from where I was so I got a few shots as it flew by.

We got a chance to take the day off and go to the Blackwater NWR in Cambridge Maryland. It is about 45 sq. Miles. But it has a Wildlife Drive which gives you an area easy to use for photo opportunities. Blackwater NWR is know for Bald Eagles and has some of the largest amounts of Eagles in the Northeast. The Bald Eagle numbers increase in the late fall with Eagles returning from Canada. We saw quite a few, but most were flying far off. Even so I got quite a few shots of Eagles considering we were only there for a few hours. Blackwater is also know for colorful sunsets since it is close to coast.
