Bald Eagle Fly-By

This Eagle took off from a tree and gave us a quick opportunity for a close fly-by. Only had a chance for a quick photo before flying off.

Eagles at Blackwater NWR

I was photographing Eagles at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. This one was feeding on a Canada Goose when another interested Eagle tried to get its meal away from him. They were off in the distance and even shooting at 800mm required some cropping.

Blackwater NWR Morning Clouds at Sunrise Panorama

I found this series of morning cloud images from a previous visit to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge Maryland. I was photographing Eagles in the morning with the warm light when I noticed this cloud formation. I was using a Canon 400mm f/4 IS DO telephoto lens with a Canon Series III 1.4X teleconverter. I just shot a series of 23 images handheld along the length of the cloud formation. For this image I assembled the 23 images in Photoshop with soft edge masks between each image. The final image came out to be 196″ x 13″ at 240 ppi. I do not know what I am going to do with it, but it was fun to put together. I might try printing it just for the fun of it. Also a group of other photos from the same day at Blackwater NWR.

Bald Eagle at Blackwater NWR

On our last trip to Blackwater NWR we found this Eagle roosting in a tree along the Wildlife Drive. We were able to get a few shots before it flew off across the refuge. I used some fill light with a flash with a Better Beamer Flash Extender since some of the Eagle’s body was in the shadows while the head had a spot of sunlight on it’s head, to help equal out the exposure. It is always fun and exciting to photograph Bald Eagles.

Blackwater NWR Bald Eagle

This Bald Eagle was sitting in a tree along the Wildlife Drive. He was back on the branch in the shadows. Usually they seem a little skittish when you come upon them along the drive, but he did not seem to pay any attention to us.  I used a flash with a Better Beamer to brighten him up somewhat. I set the flash to – 1 f/stop and set the camera to -1.33 exposure compensation in aperture priority.Canon EOS 1D MkIV, 1/125 sec @ f/11, 2500 ISO,400mm f/4 DO with Canon 1.4X teleconverter, effective focal length of 728mm.
