I came across this Black-crowned Night-heron along the path as I was walking. It was too close for the lens I had (400mm). So I shot a handheld 3 shot, overlapping, sequence to fit all of the heron in my photo. I assembled them in Photoshop and cropped in somewhat. The Heron did not seem to mind me being there. Usually they fly off you stay too long.

I saw this young Black-crowned Night-heron busy preening along the path at the Celery Farm Natural Area. It was busy for quite a while, so I captured quite a few poses. It was fun to get so many neck positions and head angles. I also liked the reddish eye against the green of the duck weed in the water. I then left him alone to carry on.

It is fun to watch a Black-crowned Night-heron foraging for a meal along the shoreline. After coming out of cover from the thick grasses it was stalking the shoreline. Then stopped when it thought it found something. Then little by little they inch forward and freeze waiting for the moment to strike. In this sequence it was frozen for quite a few minutes and seemed like a statue before realizing, I guess, there was nothing there and then returned to its cover in the grasses. I was shooting all along this hoping to get an action shot of it getting its meal, but all I have is pretty much the same shot through the sequence before it returned to where it came out.

I went to the Celery Farm Natural Area to look for Different Dragonflies. I had given up on finding any interesting birds as lately it has been very quiet there. Walking in over a small bridge there was a young Black-crowned Night-heron waiting for me. I was surprised but shot a series of images before it flew off to the far shore.

I was at the Celery Farm Natural Area a week ago trying to find some interesting birds for the blog. Nothing interesting, a lot of Canada Geese and a few ducks really far out. Right before I left this Black-crowned Night-Heron flew in. It was on a small mound in the water, under heavy shade with dabbled sunlight showing through. It was at least an interesting subject, but in poor light so I shot a bunch of different exposures and got this one. Heavily cropped, but a bird to put on the blog.

This Black-crowned Night-Heron was staying somewhat hidden behind this tree. Just peeking out, keeping an eye on what was going on. I was hoping he would come out and fish for a meal. He stayed there for most of the morning and was there when I left.

We went to the Edwin B. Forsythe NWR, Brigantine Division a few weeks ago and I am still going through my files. Along the Wildlife Drive, near the end before the wooded area, is a small grove of trees. Usually you see an occasional hawk, egrets or small birds there. Once we even saw a Bald Eagle. But on this day it was filled with a variety of birds. We saw Black-crowned Night Herons, Immature Black-crowned Night Herons, Snowy Egrets, Great Egrets and in the back under the branches was, I believe an immature Yellow-crowned Night Heron. It was fun to see that variety in the same tree.

I was looking through a folder of older images from one of my favorite local photo spots. Friends were saying how the wildlife just do not seem to as abundant there as it was years ago, so I was looking through older files. This was one of a series of a Black-crowned Night Heron fishing. I liked the warm tone in the background from the early morning sun rising, while the bird was in the shade.
