Early Morning Clouds At Blackwater NWR

This is from a previous visit to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge Maryland. We like photographing there for Bald Eagles and landscapes. Being close to the coast, you can get some amazing vibrant colors at sunrise and sunset. This is a little after sunrise and the clouds were fantastic. Shot multiple areas along the Wildlife Drive and this is one in a series. (Once I have a chance to get to the others!)

Bald Eagle Twelve o’ Clock High

I was going through images I have not worked on and found a series from the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. One of my favorite locations with colorful sunrises & sunsets and the largest concentration of Bald Eagles in the Northeast in the Winter months.  In the warmer months there are still a large number of Bald Eagles but not as many as in the Winter.

It is fun to see them flying around the Refuge, often interacting with each other.

Winging Away Bald Eagle

This Bald Eagle flew out of a tree I was standing next to. I had not noticed it was in the tree until it was winging away from me. So I got a quick shot of it flying away. So I guess the advice to this is to pay more attention to what is around you as you are walking around. So this is the one that got away!

Mad Bluebird

When we were at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge awhile ago, we saw this Bluebird on a post near the drive to the Visitor Center. It seemed to have quite an expression that made it look rather like it was mad. It just kept looking at us this way so I left it alone and moved on.

Sunrise At BWR

A 2 image vertical panorama shot at 24mm and assembled in Photoshop. On this day we arrived right at sunrise. So we went just a short way down the Wildlife Drive to an open water area  to catch the sun just rising over the horizon. I shot multiple versions, horizontal and vertical, but liked this version best with more foreground along the shore.

Eye Of The Sky

I liked this cloud formation we saw at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, in Cambridge, Maryland. I never saw one that sort of  looked like a “Porthole” or Doughnut and in such a large area. I tried a few different compositions, no foreground, foreground in vertical and horizontal formats. All were shot with a 17-40mm at 17mm.

Squawking Eagles at BWR

These Bald Eagles seemed to have a lot to say as we were passing by on the Wildlife Drive at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. They were there for quite a while, squawking loudly, as we were photographing them.

Early Morning Pre-Dawn Blackwater NWR Landscape

When we go to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, it takes about 3 1/2 hours, so it is hard to get there sometimes before sunrise. So on this day we got there before sunrise so we had time to scout a good location. Shot at 17mm before the sun broke the horizon. I liked the cool colors before the sun rose above the horizon. Below is the sun slightly breaking above the horizon @24mm. Blackwater also has spectacular sunsets, being close to the coast.

Early Morning Bald Eagle At Sunrise

I was going through old images I never worked on and found this series from the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, in Cambridge Maryland. I saw this Bald Eagle on a snag along the entrance to the Refuge. Throughout the Refuge they have snags, dead trees, setup for the Eagles to roost on. Most are quite far out, either in the water or on land across the water. I liked the warm early morning colors in the sky behind the Eagle, so I was trying various exposures since the Eagle was backlit against the colorful sky. It would glance my way every once in a while just checking me out. All of a sudden it leaned forward and seemed to be staring at me. So I took one more shot and moved on. I did not want to disturb the Eagle & I was pretty far away. I was shooting at 800mm so I do not think I was bothering it. I think it was checking me out. Plus there is a steady stream of visitors on the Wildlife Drive, so they are used to visitors stopping. These were cropped quite a bit to give more detail to the Eagle.

Immature Little Blue Heron

We noticed this Immature Little Blue Heron working the shoreline looking for a meal at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. I was able to get a couple of images before it disappeared into the grasses. I was using a Canon 400mm f/4 DO lens with a Canon 1.4x Series III Teleconverter.

Then we found another Immature Little Blue Heron along the Wildlife Drive out in the open near the end of the Wildlife Drive. It had a cluttered looking background, but it was unusual for us to see Little Blue Herons there, especially Immature ones.
