Bald Eagle IN THE TREETOPS

I have been working on images for posting on my Blog. This Image was taken on a Photo Trip years ago to the Blackwater NWR. I was using a Canon 1D MK IV with a 400mm DO lens with a 1.4x Teleconverter.

Bald Eagle Guards @ Blackwater NWR

One of my favorite subjects to photograph are Bald Eagles. I have found them in a variety of locations, even a nesting pair in a Shop Rite Parking lot. But my Favorite place for photographing Bald Eagles is the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. Many times you see them just hanging out along the Wildlife Drive and they do not seem to be bothered by your presence as long as you do not get too close, so I use a Canon 400mm with a 2X teleconverter or a 150-600mm lens with or without Teleconverters.

Blackwater NWR Bald Eagle Above Me

I am still cleaning up my Backup Drives and found this Bald Eagle image that was soaring directly above me at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. I was using a Canon 400mm DO Lens with a 1.4x Teleconverter on a Canon 1D mkIII.

Another Blackwater NWR Bald Eagle

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is one of my favorite places to photograph. As I have written in other posts here Blackwater NWR is a large NWR so many of the photo opportunities are far off in the distance. So you have to have long telephoto lenses to capture many of the Birds & other Wildlife you come upon here. After photographing at Blackwater for more than 15 years I have come up with ways to get interesting images of distant birds & wildlife. The Featured Image was taken with a Canon 1D mkIV with a 2X Teleconverter. The Canon 1D mkIV sensor has a 1.3x crop factor so with a 400mm lens & 2x teleconverter the actual focal length is more like using a lens with a focal length of 1040mm. If I want more reach I would use a Canon 7D with a 1.6x crop factor and with a 2x Teleconverter focal length is ~1280mm. I am testing how these actions work with my 150-600mm with a 2x Teleconverter for 1920mm. Also I have made Photoshop actions to up-rez images even more with very successful results. I have also added some other lenses to try these Photoshop actions on.

I am going through my Backup Drives cleaning up unneeded files and making room for future new images. I am finding some interesting images. The Images posted here are 2 images of Bald Eagles not posted before. Both Images were taken with a Canon 1D mkIV with a Canon 400mm DO lens with a 1.4x teleconverter.

Osprey On Osprey Platforms

On the spur of the moment we decided to take a photo trip to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge, Maryland. I decided to travel light and only took a Canon 7D with a Tamron 150-600mm lens with a 1.4x & 2x Teleconverter. The 7D with a 1.6X crop sensor and a 2x Teleconverter gave me a focal length of ~1920mm which came in handy because of the far distance of my photo subjects. Many of my photo subjects were out in the water or across the water in the trees where I could not get closer to the subject. I also took a Canon 1D mkIV for landscapes with a 12-24mm lens for multi-image Landscapes..

Golden Eagle Vs. Bald Eagle

I was going through my backup drives to clear out images I do not need and came across these images of a Golden Eagle going at a Bald Eagle at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. We had seen comments online that there was a Golden Eagle that was staying around the Refuge giving visitors a good chance of getting some photos. I probably posted some before but I re-adjusted some of the images for more detail and better color. All Images were taken with a Canon 400mm DO lens with a 2x Teleconverter giving me a focal length of 800mm on a Canon 1Ds MkII. With the 2X Teleconverter my f/stop wide open was f/8 so I stopped down 1 more f/stop to get a little more detail.

Marsh Edge Trail Panoramas At Blackwater NWR

We have been to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge dozens of times but for some reason we never went and explored the Marsh Edge Trail section. You basically pass the Marsh Edge parking area as you enter the Wildlife Drive. It was a Great Area to wander through and photograph. In some seasons I guess it could be very buggy but on this trip there were no insects except Dragonflies. But the Dragonflies were constantly moving so I did not get any good dragonfly images here. All images here were taken with my iPhone 11 Pro and panoramas blended in Photoshop. The Featured Image was 28 images, 2 rows of 14 images taken with the 1.5mm lens (Full Frame Equivalent of 13mm).
