W hen we were at the Blackwater NWR, we drove over to the Tubman Trail, which is another area on the Blackwater NWR. It is more walking trails with ponds and wooded areas. We were surprised to see butterflies this late in the season. They did not sit still for long and were flirting all over. The one on the featured image stayed for about 30 seconds before it moved on. The one below was on the sign for the hiking path.

The Full Moon on November 14th was the biggest and brightest until 2034. It was about 30,000 miles closer than usual. A moon can be called a “Supermoon” if it is up to 14% bigger and appears 30% brighter when it is at its farthest point in orbit. The moon orbit around Earth varies as it has an elliptical orbit. The next one similar to this one is expected to be on Monday November 25th, 2034. I do not think I will be staying up to photograph that one!

We got a chance to take the day off and go to the Blackwater NWR in Cambridge Maryland. It is about 45 sq. Miles. But it has a Wildlife Drive which gives you an area easy to use for photo opportunities. Blackwater NWR is know for Bald Eagles and has some of the largest amounts of Eagles in the Northeast. The Bald Eagle numbers increase in the late fall with Eagles returning from Canada. We saw quite a few, but most were flying far off. Even so I got quite a few shots of Eagles considering we were only there for a few hours. Blackwater is also know for colorful sunsets since it is close to coast.

We went to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge over the weekend to look for Bald Eagles. It was a quiet day at the Refuge. We saw a few eagles, most were far off, but managed to get a few good flight shots. But as we were driving on the Wildlife Drive I came upon this Great Blue Heron right off the drive in the water on a dyke. I was using a 400mm f/4 Do lens with a 1.4X Teleconverter, so I could not even get a full head shot. I did not want to change lenses because I thought it would fly off, so I shot a series of 8 handheld shots of different sections of the heron and assembled them in Photoshop. The final file was over 8 gigs with my edits. Not the greatest shot, but it was fun to put together.

This image is from months ago, taken at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Oceanville NJ. I was waiting on the Wildlife Drive for Black Skimmers to come back around for another series of shots of them skimming along the water, when these Snowy Egrets flew by me. I shot a quick series, but did not think I got anything and went back to the Skimmers. Looking later (work gets in the way!) I was surprised when I looked at this series.
