Lone Treescape

We were walking around Davidson Mill Pond Park. I saw this tree in a field that I thought looked interesting. I liked the colors and that being still Winter,  it was bare of leaves. I was using a m43 camera with a 14-140mm lens. The featured image was at 48mm. Then I shot a 6 shot series at 14mm to combine in Photoshop. I liked the clouds and the farm look in the distance and the wider view of 3 images in 2 rows for the pano.

Rainbow Clouds

These colorful clouds are called iridescent clouds. When you see a cloud like this, you know there are tiny ice crystals or water droplets in the air. Larger ice crystals produce solar or lunar halos, but tiny ice crystals or water droplets cause light to be diffracted spread out creating this rainbow like effect in the clouds.

Gull Pond Panorama

When I am shooting with a long lens, quite often I also carry a m43 Camera with a 14-140mm lens. It comes in handy for “grab” shots when the longer lens is too long, and is lighter to carry then 2 bigger cameras. With this lens I can go fairly wide to fairly long, 28mm to 280mm with close focus (35mm sort of equivalent) in a small light weight package. Also I do not like changing lenses on a windy day out in the field. This is a six shot (vertical framing) panorama, assembled in Photoshop.

Before we left the clouds really came in and “brightened up” the landscapes with more dimension. Just a plain blue or overcast sky is just boring.

Usually there are Gulls, Swans, a few Great Blue Herons or a variety of ducks, etc. here but it was a slow day for wildlife.

I have posted quite a few panoramas lately, but that was most of the opportunities I had on this visit.

A Big Y In The Sky – Or A Large Thanksgiving Turkey Wishbone

When we got home Thanksgiving Eve, we saw this huge “Y” cloud in the sky. I never saw a cloud shaped like this before so I shot quite a few shots as it was moving by above me. I only had my iPhone with me, so I shot multiple shots and spent about 15-20 minutes shooting as it drifted overhead. As it got more directly over me, it was harder to get shots because even shooting multiple sections, with the wide angle of view on the iPhone, it was starting to distort the shape making it harder to combine into a multiple image panorama on the ends. I settled on using this series. I combined them as best I could from the series that I shot farther away. 5 horizontal images, overlapped and combined. I am learning combining iPhone images are a challenge because of the wide angle of view and the distortion differences between images. I tried shooting a panorama on the iPhone as it was overhead, but that really distorted the ends of the pano. Even the the problems this is one of my favorite cloud images!

Clouds over brigantine

When we were at the Edwin B Forsyth NWR, Brigantine Division, we were looking for birds along the Wildlife Drive. But I liked the tranquil look of the soft clouds reflecting in the water. So I shot a series of shots combining them in Photoshop.

Cloudscapes

Another one of my favorite subjects are what I call Cloudscapes, instead of landscapes I look up. Fluffy clouds and bright colors make interesting subjects. Sunrises and sunsets help add another color dimension. They can also have an Artsy Abstract look and feel. A lot of my Cloudscapes I shoot with my iPhone using the app ProCamera. It gives you +&- exposure control, a nice HDR feature and a variety of low light shooting features.

Stacked Clouds

When I was leaving work and walking to my car, I saw these layers of clouds above me. I liked the stacked and staggered look going off in the distance and thought it looked interesting. I did not want to go back in and get a camera so I just used my iPhone.  This is a single shot version. I also shot multiples to blend in Photoshop later.

iPhone Sky Panorama

This is a two shot panorama shot with an iPhone. Then I assembled the images in Photoshop.

iPhone Sky

When I was leaving work, I liked the clouds in the sky. I only had my iPhone, so I shot a burst of 8 images. My iPhone seems to have quite a bit of noise, so I  loaded them in Photoshop, put them in a layered file & converted them to a Smart Object layered stack.  Then used Stack Mode > Median to lower the noise level. Helps make my iPhone images more usable and lowers the noise a lot.

Doughnut Clouds

I liked this cloud landscape with the sky in the middle with little wispy clouds against the blue sky. There was also a warmer color on the left from the rising sun and cooler on the right side. It almost looks like a tunnel in the clouds accenting the little clouds in the center. Shot at 17mm.
