One of my favorite subjects to photograph are Bald Eagles. I have found them in a variety of locations, even a nesting pair in a Shop Rite Parking lot. But my Favorite place for photographing Bald Eagles is the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. Many times you see them just hanging out along the Wildlife Drive and they do not seem to be bothered by your presence as long as you do not get too close, so I use a Canon 400mm with a 2X teleconverter or a 150-600mm lens with or without Teleconverters.

A series of Bald Eagle in-flight images taken over a few visits to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. I find Blackwater NWR has one of the largest amount of Bald Eagles in the Northeast and is a fairly easy drive to get there from my home. The Featured Image was a quickly taken 2 shot panorama to get both wingtips in the image.

One of my Favorite NWRs to photograph in is the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. Great variety of subjects from the Wildlife and Great Sunrises & Sunsets. You never know what you will see to photograph. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge hosts the largest concentration of breeding Bald Eagles on the East Coast, north of Florida. Bald Eagles in the wild can live up to 30 years, but usually average 15 years. Following are a series of Bald Eagle images from various trips to photograph there.

Many times when you visit the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, you can see Eagles early in the morning on snags or on tree branches as the sun is rising. It is fun to see how many you can find to photograph.

As the sun was going down on our first day of our trip to Blackwater NWR, we noticed these 2 Eagles on the top of the trees along the last leg of the Wildlife Drive. Their nest seems to be a little further down from these trees, but that is for another post. It seems the male is on the left, the female is on the right. The featured image is shot @ 140mm with a m43 lens on a Olympus Camera (FOV full frame camera equivalent 280mm)

When we go to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge Maryland, we try to arrive right before sunrise. It takes us about 4 hours, so with traffic, many times we arrive a little late. On this trip we got there right on time. Driving down the entrance road and stopping to sign in, we spotted these 2 Eagles in a tree right along the entrance road. I liked the warm light as the sun was rising behind the tree with the Eagles, giving me an abstract silhouette of the Eagles. I got a few shots, but we wanted to get a little further down the road for some Landscapes with the rising sun.

We enjoy going to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge outside of Cambridge, Maryland. You never know what you will find, so it is like going on a treasure hunt. It is a large refuge, so even though there are large numbers of birds & wildlife, some might be far out in the distance for photography. Long lenses are good to bring here, but if you are patient & observant you can find a lot of photo opportunities. Blackwater has a Wildlife Drive plus walking trails. It is known for its large population of Bald Eagles and also has some Golden Eagles. It has one of the largest populations of Bald Eagles on the East Coast, which nearly doubles in the Winter months. In the Summer months Ospreys return and quite often you see them interacting with the Bald Eagles. Also look for a variety of Harriers, Herons, Egrets, Swans, Ducks, Pelicans, Snow Geese, etc. Here are a few Eagles, Osprey and a Harrier.
