I noticed this American White Ibis way up in a tree at J.N. Ding Darling NWR. The White Ibis really stood out against the bright blue sky. It is amazing such a large bird can hold on to such a thin branch. It’s feet are really wrapped around the branch that it is holding on to. Images taken with a Canon 400mm DO lens on a Canon 1D mkIV.

Little Blue Heron Images

I was going through backup drives and found a series to post of Little Blue Heron images. Little Blue Herons are some of my favorite Herons to photograph. They always seem to have a very intense look when they are searching for a meal. The Featured Image was taken @ J.N. Ding Darling NWR along the Wildlife Drive with a 100-400mm lens @ 400mm, f/8 on a Canon 7D.

Immature Black-crowned Night-Herons From 2 Different National Wildlife Refuges

Two images of Immature Black-Crowned Night Herons from 2 different National Wildlife Refuges. The Featured Image is from a trip to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Brigantine Division in Oceanville, NJ. That image was taken with a Sigma 300-800mm zoom lens @ 800mm. The image below was taken along the Wildlife Drive at the J.N. Ding Darling NWR in Florida with a Canon 400mm DO lens with a 1.4x Teleconverter.
Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron Fly-By

As we were walking along the Wildlife Drive at J.N. Ding Darling NWR early in the morning this Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron flew right by us. I was not expecting a photo subject would fly by us but I was able to get this shot before it flew behind the trees. I guess I should be more aware of what was going around me as I was concentrating to get closer to a photo subject in the tree in front of us. Image taken @f/8, 1/4000, ISO 1250, 400mm DO lens, 1.4X Teleconverter, Canon 1D mkIV. I usually do not have my ISO that high but raised it because of the dim early morning light.
Little Egret Panorama

A Little Egret 2 image Panorama from a previous visit to J.N. Ding Darling NWR in Florida. The Featured Image is a cropped version to fit better in the Featured Image area. Below is the full 2 vertical images panorama showing the Egret & the Egret’s reflection in the water. Images taken handheld with a Canon 1D mkIV with a 400mm DO lens & 1.4x Teleconverter @ f/8, ISO 3200. I upped the ISO to 3200 because it was early in the morning and the Egret was in the shadows. So it was pretty dark under the trees and I was shooting handheld.
Great Egret Catching A Snack

Going through Backup Drives working on images that I did not have time to adjust or work on when I was still working. This is from a photo trip to the J.N. Ding Darling NWR in Florida 2 years ago. As we were walking along the Wildlife Drive I noticed this Great Egret working its way in the water channel along the Drive. It got to a sunlit section and I was able to get a couple of images before it flew off. Images taken with a Canon R with a Tamron 150-600mm with a 1.4X Teleconverter @ 840mm, f/16, 1/640 sec. Because it was in the bright sun I also set the Camera to a -2/3 exposure compensation to hold detail in the white Egret.
Female Anhingas On Branches

Along the Wildlife Drive at Ding Darling NWR, we found 2 different female Anhingas sunning on branches. The featured image and the first image below were on one side of the Wildlife Drive. The other female Anhinga, shown below were directly across the Wildlife Dive from the first Anhinga. All images taken with a 400mm DO lens with on a Canon 7D . I actually had to back up from both birds to fit them in the frame.
Roseate Spoonbill Flyby

Roseate Spoonbills are one of my favorite Florida birds to photograph! Plus they are a large colorful bird that fills the frame & stands out in photos. In this image I really liked the outstretched wings showing the feather detail and the size of the wingspan. Their wingspan on average is 47 to 52 inches. Image taken at J.N. Ding Darling NWR in Florida a few years ago with a 300mm lens, 1.4X teleconverter on a Canon 7D.
Crocodile At J.N. Ding Darling NWR

This is from a trip to J.N.Ding Darling NWR in May of 2005. We were surprised to see a Crocodile along the Wildlife Drive. They had people there to make sure people did not get close to it and also to keep an eye on where it might go next. It was interesting to see such a large Crocodile there, just sunning on the shoreline. Also it seemed to keep it’s mouth open the whole time showing off it’s menacing Large teeth! Back then I was using a Canon 1D mkII with a 100-400mm lens with a 1.4x Teleconverter. The featured image was taken @385mm with a 100-400mm lens @ 385mm.

Snowy Egret Early AM

These images are from a previous trip years ago to J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Sanibel, Florida. It is one of our favorite places to visit when we are in Florida. We were walking early in the morning on the Indigo Trail which is off the Wildlife Drive. Usually there are quite a few Egrets & Herons there feeding in the am. The problem photographing in the early am there is it quite dark being in the shade from all the trees & vegetation above. After I took the featured image, I wanted to include the Snowy Egret’s reflection in the water. So I shot 2 vertical images to combine in Photoshop for a long vertical Panorama to include the reflection.
