Osprey On Osprey Platforms

On the spur of the moment we decided to take a photo trip to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge, Maryland. I decided to travel light and only took a Canon 7D with a Tamron 150-600mm lens with a 1.4x & 2x Teleconverter. The 7D with a 1.6X crop sensor and a 2x Teleconverter gave me a focal length of ~1920mm which came in handy because of the far distance of my photo subjects. Many of my photo subjects were out in the water or across the water in the trees where I could not get closer to the subject. I also took a Canon 1D mkIV for landscapes with a 12-24mm lens for multi-image Landscapes..

Osprey Nest On Osprey Platform At J.N. Ding Darling NWR Wildlife Drive

A series of images showing an Osprey nest on an Osprey Platform along the Wildlife Drive at the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. All images were taken handheld @ 600mm with a Tamron 150-600mm lens on a Canon R. Some images are cropped to show more detail of my distant subjects. The Canon R Raw files have very little noise with a lot of clean detail when shooting “Raw” files which gives me a lot of opportunities for severe image cropping for getting even closer to far off Bird images .

Ospreys In Flight At Blackwater NWR

I am going through images I had not had time to post when I was working. Being retired now I am catching up on images that I wanted to post. These Osprey images are from a previous trip to the Blackwater NWR years ago. The Featured Image was taken with a Canon 400mm DO lens with a Canon 7D.

Osprey Nest On Platform At Brigantine

Images are from a trip to the Brigantine Division of the Edwin B. Forsythe NWR in Oceanville, NJ. There are many Osprey Platforms scattered along the Wildlife Drive at Brigantine to get interesting images of Ospreys in and near their nests. Also you can see them flying into the Platform to feed the young and get interesting Osprey nest images if you have long lenses. The Images here are along the first straight away upon entering the Wildlife Drive with Atlantic City blurred in the background. The images were taken with a Canon 400mm DO lens with a Canon 2X Teleconverter on a Canon 1DmkIV.

Osprey Flying In to Osprey Platform

A series of images of an Osprey flying onto one of the Osprey Platforms along the Wildlife Drive at the Brigantine Division of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. This series was from a few years ago. If you wait for a while along the Drive you can get some interesting images of Ospreys coming & going to the nest on the platforms. There were no chicks yet in this series of images. But you can see some nesting materials are starting to fill the platform for making the nest. All images here were taken with a Canon 400mm DO lens with a 1.4x Teleconverter.

Osprey Fly-By At Brigantine

I was going through images from a previous trip to the Brigantine Division of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge near Oceanville, NJ. This is a series of images of an Osprey that flew fairly close by me with nesting material. I was out of the car & on the Wildlife Drive which enabled me to follow the Osprey as it flew by. All images were taken with a Canon 400mm DO lens with a 1.4x teleconverter on a Canon 1D mkIV.

Osprey Flying Towards Nest

I photographed this Osprey years ago at the Brigantine Division of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey. I was going through & cleaning up old hard drives and found images from this trip. We liked to watch & photograph the Ospreys flying to and from the Osprey Platforms along the Drive. This image was from one of our early trips there in July 2006. Back then I was using a 400mm Canon DO lens on a Canon 1D mkII that shot with a 8 megapixel sensor for a 24 meg file at ~8 fps . In today’s world that seems low-res and slow! But it did a pretty good job back then. But you could open the files quite a bit bigger and hold fine detail if you used Adobe Camera Raw and set the parameters for larger prints or severe cropping. Image taken @ f/10, 1/1000 sec, ISO 320.

Osprey Landing At Nest

These are from a previous visit to the Edwin B. Forsythe NWR, Brigantine Division in Oceanville NJ. There are many Osprey Platforms with nests scattered along the Wildlife Drive. So if you are patient and wait for the Ospreys to return you can get some interesting flight & landing images. If there are young Ospreys in the nests there is usually more activity with the adult birds bringing food and feeding the young. These are images are of a landing sequence. Images were taken with a Canon 1D mkIV with a Canon 400mm DO lens with a 1.4x Canon Teleconverter. Looking at the Camera Raw Data the nest was 154 feet from the Wildlife Drive .
