We went to the Brigantine Division of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Oceanville, NJ to see what we could find. In the Summer there are lots of shore birds, Herons, Egrets, Ibises, Gulls, Terns, Ospreys, an occasional Bald Eagle, etc. It is also great for dragonflies and small birds. Along the Wildlife Drive there are many Osprey Platforms which are a good spot to wait for Ospreys to fly in with a fish for the younger Ospreys & other interactions with the younger birds. I liked the symmetry of the two adult Ospreys on the arms but did not want to use a wider lens to get them both in because I wanted to retain the detail. So I shot a series of 2 shot sequences with a 400mm with a 1.4X teleconverter for a panorama showing the whole platform. I liked these 2 the best out of my series.

We found this Osprey Nest along the Wildlife Drive, along the shoreline by the water. It probably was only about 4 feet of the ground in a small tree. I have never seen an Osprey nest this low to the ground before.

I was watching this female Osprey with a fish she had just caught. She was eating the meal on the ground when a Gull also got interested in her meal and decided that was a meal he wanted also. The Osprey took off, flying back towards her nest along the Wildlife Drive. The Gull kept trying to get a piece of the meal along the way and did not give up until she got near her nest.

We went to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Brigantine Division, in Oceanville, NJ this morning to see the sunrise and what wildlife was starting to return to the Refuge after the long Winter. There were lots of Great Egrets & Ospreys around the refuge. Here are a few photos of a female Osprey that had a close flyby. This is one of the first years we saw nests on all the Osprey platforms plus some even in small trees along the drive. This is the most Ospreys I have ever seen at Brigantine.

This Osprey was working the lake for a meal for quite a while. Never caught anything, but kept on trying. Eventually flew to a tree and stayed there. It gave me an opportunity to practice shooting quite a few flight photos after a long winter.

I was at the local Nature Preserve when an Osprey flew in. Seems a little early here for an Osprey, but was happy to see one. It was a very overcast day, but still got a few splashes as the Osprey dove into the Lake, along with some exits out of the Lake. Interesting to see the sequence of flying out of the lake. Also the usual shaking off the water once airborne. The Osprey never got a fish, but tried multiple times. Here are some images from a few of the attempts.

This Osprey was fishing for its early morning meal, but kept getting bothered by this blackbird buzzing it. It banked after a pass of the small bird bothering it. I really liked the wing position of the Osprey. The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland has a large number of Ospreys in the warmer months. Often you see them interacting with the Eagles, which try to steal their fish.

I was going through some older files and found this Osprey fishing sequence from The Celery Farm Natural Area a few years ago. I thought it was an interesting way to show how an Osprey fishes for its meals.

I thought Ospreys had left our area because of the colder weather, but I was surprised to see this female Osprey fly in. It circled for quite a few passes, looking for a meal, but eventually moved on. They are always fun to watch fly and glide by.

It was a busy day for Ospreys at The Celery Farm Natural Area. Lately there has not been a lot of activity with the birds here, but the last few days the Ospreys have been very busy. Multiple sightings during the morning and late afternoon. Multiple dives further out in the Lake. Usually only getting small fish. Here are a few of the hundreds of images I captured today.
