This image is a little different from a previous post as it is Red-winged Blackbirds flying out in the early evening against a setting sun. Image shot at 800mm.

It is fun to see the large flocks of Red-winged blackbirds flying around the Blackwater National Wildlife in the Winter months. Sometimes it looks like a moving dark cloud oscillating around the refuge. In a previous blog I had a 7 shot panorama of thousands of Red-winged blackbirds flying along one of the main access roads to the refuge. Every once in a while you see an eagle picking out one for a meal.

On our trip to the Brigantine Division of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, we saw large flocks of Female Red-winged Blackbirds in the plants along the Wildlife Drive. They are usually always here, but hard to photograph because as soon as you slow down they fly off. This trip I actually got quite a few shots of them, more than any other trip through the refuge.

In the colder months there are huge flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds flying through the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge outside of Cambridge Maryland. The number of Bald Eagles increase also during the colder months to approximately 150. When the water freezes over the Eagles sometimes are seen taking Red-winged Blackbirds or Canada Geese for their meals. Here are some photos of the flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds flying through the refuge and also photos of Eagles guarding their lunch.
