Winter is coming to an end! I was going through old images backed up from years ago and found a lot I had never worked on. This was from a local Nature Area that I spent a lot of time photographing wildlife, macro, landscapes, skyscapes & dragonflies. Mostly anything that caught my eye and that I thought was interesting. On this morning the sunrise was amazing!

While I was photographing various ducks passing by me, I saw this small tight group of Canada Geese coming in for a landing. I liked the warm background color and the tight grouping of the geese along with the reflections in the water. So I shot a few images but liked this one the best. Usually I ignore the Canada Geese but was glad I shot a series on these. Next I want to practice panning along with them, just have to wait for more geese to come by.

I went to our local Wildlife Refuge on Christmas morning to photograph some ducks that have been there. But I was surprised to see this Great Blue Heron that was close by. Sometimes one does stay over the winter, but there have not been any around for quite a while. This one kept going almost completely under the water and splashing around for probably 2o minutes. I have never seen them go that deep in the water. Where it was splashing around was not deep so if it were standing upright the entire body would be above the water. When it was really splashing around you could see the membrane that covers the eye. It was fun to watch and photograph.

Here are some images taken in the Spring of a Wood Duck leaving a Wood Duck Box with a damaged egg. Some say it is removing a damaged egg. Others say it was an egg from another Wood Duck. Either way it was interesting to watch. I only had a brief second to get a couple of images.

While I was photographing around the Black-crowned Night-heron, in the previous post, this tiny muskrat came right up to where I was standing. I had added extension tubes & a 1.4X telconverter to my telephoto to try finding some Dragonflies and could only focus in an area of 3 feet to maybe 6 feet away. While not a baby or “Kitten” as the young are called, it was probably a couple of months old. With my setup I could pretty much only get his eye with a little area around the eye. He kept me company for a few minutes until I started to take off the extension tubes, thinking maybe I could get more of his body, but he scurried off back in the water and swam away. While setup for the dragonflies, I also shot a 2 shot panorama with the same setup of this Canada Goose, which was keeping me company all morning. I shot the left side with the eye, than moved the camera a little to the right to blend in the beak in focus.

Over the weeks I have seen many Wood Ducks check out this Wood Duck Box. It seems each pair checks it out and moves on. Today this pair checked it out. The female flew in and again flew out. Then they both swam away. I got a series of exiting, but liked the featured one above the best.

Some Warblers showed up at the Celery Farm Natural Area on Sunday. They are fun to try to photograph as they are small, quick, and usually semi-hidden and constantly moving in the tree branches. So, they are difficult to get clean good shots. I will start with the Yellow Warbler. These are cropped quite drastically, but help show their behavior and movement.

It was a slow morning at the Nature Preserve, but then an Egret flew in and landed on a pile of sticks in the water. Shooting a sequence showing the different wing positions in landing.

I went to the local Nature Preserve this morning hoping to see an Osprey and maybe a few different ducks. Saw an Osprey across the lake but it flew off into the distance. A Great Egret flew in and landed on a close pile of sticks in the water and I was concentrating on the Egret when suddenly 6 Mute Swans flew in & did a close Fly By then landed on the far side of the lake. Mute Swans are one of my favorites. Their wingbeats sound cool as they fly by, especially when there are six of them. Plus they are a Large subject to photograph! I could not get all six in the frame, but it was still fun to see them.
